When are practices?

Our teams will practice twice per week. Practices are on Sunday evenings and one other weekday (likely to be Monday or Wednesday). Practices begin the first week of January.

Where are we practicing?

Our primary practice facility will be The Columbus Academy, 4300 Cherrybottom Road. All teams will practice there at least one day per week. We will supplementĀ some of our teams with other facilities in or near Gahanna. We will announce those locations when contracts are finalized.

Griffin Volleyball Club is still negotiating one large space to be our permanent home. We will keep all our families in the loop as these talks progress. Rest assured, we are committed to finding space that is conveniently located in Gahanna or Northeast Columbus.

What is the tournament schedule?

Tournaments will typically run February – May. Although we have not committed to any tournaments, we will select venues that are within a 1-hour drive of central Ohio. Younger teams (10U-11U) will play 5-6 tournament dates. Ages 12U-17U will attend 6-10 tournament dates. Most tournaments will be one day, but there is a possibility of a 2-day tournament for some teams.

How many teams will there be?

We expect enough players to have at least one team per age group. We also expect that some age groups will have more than one team.

Why does Columbus need another volleyball club?

Gahanna, New Albany, and the northeast Columbus vicinity is severely lacking a convenient, competitive volleyball venue. We started Griffin Volleyball to bring great coaching and instruction to the area. We want to help build the volleyball programs of Gahanna, New Albany, Reynoldsburg, Licking Heights, Whitehall, and NE Columbus athletic programs.

What are the age groups for your club?

Griffin Volleyball Club will be using the traditional and grade-based definitions for any American or Regional level teams. Those definitions can be found here:

How do you find your coaches?

We hire experienced coaches who share our coaching philosophy. Our coaches range in experience from long-time middle school coaches to former collegiate athletes. We also have experienced club coaches and current high school coaches. Athletes ultimately want to make their junior high or high school teams, so each coach helps create a road map for each player.

What’s the story behind the name?

A griffin (or gryphon) is a mythical creature with the head of an eagle and the body of a lion. It’s the perfect combination of the mascots of New Albany and Gahanna Lincoln schools, and a great symbol for our location!
